Formerly the Automotive Engineering Branch of China Mechanical Engineering Society, it was established in Changchun in 1963. Initiated by Jiang Zemin, Hu Liang, Meng Shaonong and Wu Zhengruo, Jiang Zemin served as chairman of the first Council and Guo Li, Fang Chuanliu, Wang Nenhe, Hu Liang and Zhang Deqing served as vice-chairmen. In 1985, with the approval of the State Economic Restructuring Commission, the "China Automotive Engineering Society" was established. Hu Liang was the first chairman and joined the China Association for Science and Technology in March of the same year. In September 1991, it was approved by the Ministry of Civil Affairs to become a corporate body. The meeting place of the society is located in Beijing. The previous directors are Jiang Zemin, Hu Liang, Zhang Xingye, Zhang Xiaoyu and Fu Yuwu. Currently, they are the 8th Council.
