In 1963, 17 people, including Zhu Yuanding, Wu Xianwen and Zhu Shuping, initiated the establishment of China Fisheries Society. On June 16 of the same year, the inaugural meeting and the first academic meeting of the Chinese Fisheries Society were held in Beijing. The meeting elected Yang Fuqing as chairman, Zhu Yuanding, Wu Xianwen and Zhu Shuping as vice-chairmen and Mingshan as secretary-general. From 1966 to 1977, the Society ceased its activities. In 1978, a restoration conference was held in Beijing and Xiao Peng was elected chairman. The society is located in Beijing. Its previous directors are Yang Fuqing, Xiao Peng, Gong Mingshan, Meng Qingwen, Zhang Yanxi, Tu Fengjun, Tang Qisheng and Jia Xiaoping. Currently, it is the 9th Council.
